Education Programs

Education Programs Contents

SCHOOLS:

The Noxious Weed Staff attend the 6th grade outdoor education camps. Our inspectors educate the classes on noxious and poisonous weeds and work with them to hand-pull knapweed in the camp areas. This year we are expanding our visits to the 5th grade classes as well, to get them out pulling the weeds in the towns at the same time as the town's clean up programs. We are expanding on our grade levels and classes each year.

RECERTIFICATION CLASSES AT NO CHARGE:

The Weed Office organizes 2 Re-certification classes each year for Pesticide Licensing credits, free of charge for Okanogan County license holders. The office provides education to landowners on new chemicals and correct rates to be sprayed on different weeds.

Each February (see agenda), the first 100 people to apply for their Pesticide Licenses will have their license, the class and testing with the Dept. of Ag paid for by the Noxious Weed Control Board. They were instrumental with Legislation in attaining 2 new categories of Pesticide License, developed for landowners who only treat weeds or weeds and rodents. They are called the "Limited" and the "Rancher" with reduced credits and fees each year. For more information, please contact the office for a brochure.

ALL OUR INFORMATION IS FREE:

We publish brochures on Herbicides, rates, calibration, purchasing grass seed, specific weed brochures, State Noxious weed list and mandatory control weeds. These are all free to the public.

Our on-site visits to the landowner's property to give recommendations for weed control is free and a service to our citizens. We also write weed control plans for ranch management if requested.

We develop weed control plans for Homeowner Associations that already exist and need management plans or new developments starting in our County. We are part of the County's Planning unit for 'Comment Sheets' on all new plats and developments. This is part of our education for new landowners moving into our County and are unaware of our Noxious weed control policies and procedures.

We participate in many speaking engagements inside and outside our County. We enjoy talking about noxious weeds and finding solutions to management problems.  Groups that we visit each year with noxious weed education information along with a slide presentation is as follows: Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, Retired Persons Assoc., Master Gardeners, Realtors, Idaho Dept. of Ag., Cattlemen's Assoc., Garden Clubs, Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, USFS, Okanogan County Public Works and several out of State seminars.
